Rogowski Coil Current Sensors

Application Notes:

The Rogowski Coil current sensor is suitable for measuring alternating current (AC) and/ or fluctuating DC current pulses. The sensor operates on the principle that a voltage is induced in a coil whose plane is perpendicular to the conductor carrying the electrical current and perpendicular to the magnetic flux. The induced voltage is proportional to the rate of change of the current in the conductor. Integrating the resulting voltage signal (integral of dv/dt) provides a measurement of the current in the conductor. An explanation of the Rogowski Coil principle can be found in Wikipedia – Rogowski Coil. Suitable for incorporation into products used for electric power measurement, electric power quality monitoring, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) or protective relays. The Rogowski Coil current sensor is ideal in applications where it is necessary that the sensor be capable of responding to a wide operating current range, a wide frequency range and/ or is exposed to harsh operating conditions.

Advantages:

Rogowski Coil Current Sensor Features:

Mini Loop, Split Rogowski Coil – JRF55/80/105 features a mini loop, split configuration intended for installation on relatively small diameter primary conductors without necessitating the taking of the primary conductor off-line. Flexible Split Rogowski Coil – JRF1/2/3 features a split-core rope configuration which permits the mounting on large irregularly shaped primary conductors without necessitating the taking of the primary conductor off-line.
JRF333M/MB models are the mini-loop split and the flexible split Rogowski Coil current sensors configured with a voltage integrator (integrating the dv/ dt signal) to provide a proportional voltage output to the primary conductor current.

*NEW* JRF MOI models are the flexible split Rogowski Coil current sensors configured with an internal voltage integrator (integrating the dv/ dt signal) to provide a proportional voltage output to the primary conductor current. Fix Mounted Rogowski Coil Current Sensors – Intended for applications where the current sensor is mounted in a fixed position. The installation requires the taking of the primary conductor offline and disconnecting for installation.

The model JRLO is one example of the types of sensors that are available. Configurations are available in toroidal or eliptical configurations suitable for BUS bars.
